How it's calculated
Net profit = price + shipping charged − marketplace fees − product cost − your shipping & packaging − other costs − VAT owed
• Marketplace fee = fee % × (price + shipping charged) + fixed fee per order
• VAT owed (if registered) = (sales − product cost − shipping & packaging − other costs − fees) × rate ÷ (1 + rate), assuming your costs include reclaimable VAT
• Income tax is not included.
Default fees are examples based on public information for US sellers as of October 2026: Amazon 15% referral (most categories), eBay 13.6% + $0.40 per order (most categories), Etsy 6.5% transaction + 3% & $0.25 processing + $0.20 listing, Shopify Payments 2.9% + $0.30 (Basic), Walmart 15% (most categories range 8–15%), TikTok Shop 8% (official table showed 6%; an increase to 8% was reported for August 2026). Always check your seller dashboard. This calculator is for estimates only and is not tax advice.
How Shopify fees are calculated
- Higher plans have lower card rates (listed at 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced).
- If you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own transaction fee (2% on Basic).
- The monthly plan fee and paid apps are not included - divide them by your monthly orders and add them to Other cost per unit.
- International cards and currency conversion can cost more; check your Shopify admin for your country's rates.

Frequently asked questions
How much are Etsy fees in 2026?
For US sellers, Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, and payment processing of 3% + $0.25 per order. That is roughly 9.5% plus $0.45 per sale. Offsite Ads fees (15%, or 12% for shops over $10k a year, capped at $100 per order) apply only to orders that come from those ads.
How much does eBay take per sale?
For most categories in the US, eBay's final value fee is about 13.6% of the total sale, including shipping, plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 if the order is $10 or less). On a $29.99 item with free shipping, that is about $4.48.
What is Amazon's referral fee?
Most categories on Amazon US pay a 15% referral fee, which Amazon kept unchanged for 2025 and 2026. Some categories are lower, such as 8% for electronics. If you use FBA, add the fulfillment fee per unit in "Other cost per unit".
How do I calculate profit margin?
Profit margin = net profit ÷ selling price × 100. For example, a $29.99 item with $10 product cost and $5 shipping & packaging leaves about $11.69 profit on Etsy (39.0% margin) and about $10.51 on eBay (35.0%), before income tax.
Which marketplace leaves the most profit?
With the same price, lower-fee channels like your own Shopify store keep the most per sale, while Amazon and Walmart (around 15%) keep the least. But sales volume differs by marketplace, so compare profit per unit × units sold.
